Instead, he is a doctor. in place of为介词短语，也是“代替、而不”的意思，表示“以甲代乙”，而instead of则是“用甲不用乙”，除“代替”外，还有对乙作否定的意思，有时译“不”的意思，例如： We will use pens in place of pencils.(这里含有pencil的否定) instead of 可加介词短语而in place of不能，且搭配比instead of 少，例如： 1．We usually go to school by bike instead of by bus. (正确) 2．We usually go to school by bike in place of by bus. (错误)
